Dragnet That Ensnares Good Samaritans, Too - New... →
The article title is vague. Basically, cops leave purses, shopping bags, and wallets sitting alone and then arrest people who pick them up and don’t report it to the nearest police officer. This kind of stuff is ridiculous. It’s like Minority Report but without the all-seeing human mutants. UPDATE: I love the first comment on Reddit, “Someone should start turning in...

Major Filevault Bug with OS X 10.5.1 Update (and...
I’m not on Leopard yet, but my friend installed Leopard and immediately ran Software Update, thereby downloading the 10.5.1 update. It seems that this update cannot handle drives that have Filevault turned on, and so you get stuck in a “your drive needs to be repaired” cycle upon trying to login. After some searching, I came across this solution: Apple support had me reboot and hold down...

Play to Multiple Speakers via Airtunes
I’m a year or so behind on this, but this is incredible! If you upgrade your Airport Express to Firmware Version 6.3 you can play iTunes music to multiple speakers. It’s incredible how perfectly synchronized it is. I’m sitting here listening to an album through both my Creatures and my PowerBook speakers and it’s spot on. This would be a lot cooler with multiple Airport...

Facebook for iPhones →
Saw this a while back but seeing it on an iPhone reminded me how incredibly cool it is. What AJAX-y Web 2.0 apps should aspire to.

– Good point from BrainLog, and one reason I think people are a bit quick to write off e-book readers. (I don’t think the Kindle will catch on because it’s too expensive, but I can see e-book readers replacing books in the long-term.)

Adding PDF Support to Camino
With OS X 10.4 (Tiger), Apple gave Safari the ability to view PDFs in the browser. This is very convenient as you do not have to download the PDF and open it in another application. However, I use the Mozilla-based browser Camino which does not have this ability. In comes Schubert|it’s PDF Browser Plugin. If you want this plugin to handle all PDFs in all your browsers, then go ahead and...

Search Wikipedia from Camino Location Bar
Camino allows you to add shortcuts to Bookmarks. If you type something after the shortcut in the location bar, it will insert it in where you put %s in the URL. So, to search Wikipedia, create a bookmark with the URL http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=%s&go=Go and the shortcut “wiki”. When you type wiki Los Angeles in the URL bar, it will take you to the correct...

I finally upgraded my old 12” PowerBook to 1.25 gigs of RAM. It makes a huge difference. Amazingly, I ordered it from Newegg.com at 1pm Wednesday and received it at 8pm Thursday.
